The Otterhound is a large scent hound, sometimes referred to as 'Woollies' due to their thick double coat. Although their primary use is as a tracking dog, they also make excellent family pets. These rare dogs are strong and well suited to endurance work.
Character//
Otterhounds are a balanced breed with a good temperament, which makes them relatively easy to train. They are affectionate and bond well in a family environment; they have a tendency to react badly to strict training and may become nervous if pushed too hard. As is common with hounds, once they have picked up a scent and have begun following it, it can be more difficult to recall them. They are quite energetic and enjoy water.
Size//
Bitch, around 60cm tall and weighs 36kg. Dog, around 69cm tall and weighs approximately 54kg.
Health//
The breed can be susceptible to epilepsy and you should ensure that you check the breeder's history for this before buying a puppy. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia are also known problems, however on the whole this is a healthy breed, which lives from 10-15 years old.
Special Care//
Due to their large size and affectionate nature, special care should be taken when introducing them to very small children and the elderly.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
