The Old English Sheepdog is an intelligent playful breed. The dog's comical appearance sometimes distracts from its bright and adaptable nature. As their main function is as a herding dog, they require a large amount of exercise. In addition to their herding abilities they also make excellent family pets, generally getting on well with children, strangers and other dogs alike.

Character//

This breed is intelligent and needs a strong willed trainer to ensure that no undesirable traits are allowed to creep in. The Old English is however, keen to please their handlers. Special attention must be paid whilst in the early stages of training, not to allow any boisterous traits to become established.

Size//

Dog ranges from 61-71cm tall and weighs around 36-46kg. The bitch is about 56-66cm tall and ranges from 30-40kg.

Health//

Hip Dysplasia is quite a common problem with this breed. Wobbler syndrome can also be common, usually between the ages of 3-12 months. If left untreated this can develop into total quadriplegia. Deafness can be found in some cases. Ensure that any coat/skin problems are dealt with quickly, as the thickness of the coat can make it difficult to treat once established.

Special Care//

Owning an Old English sheepdog involves a serious commitment to grooming and one should not be bought on without a serious consideration.

Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
