The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was originally used for enticing ducks and geese to the lake, and retrieving once they have been shot. They are now more commonly found as gundogs, companions and family pets. They are very active types that need a lot of exercise and if possible swimming to keep them entertained. Being very intelligent training is not a problem as they learn quickly.
Character//
The Toller is an intelligent dog so potential owners will need to be up for plenty of walks. They would suit the country life best with access to plenty of space being favourable. A family situation would be fine as the breed gets on well with children. Socialization from a young age is important.
Size//
They are one of the smallest working breeds, dogs should measure between 48-51cm at the withers and bitches should ideally measure between 45-48cm at the withers. They weigh between 17-23kg.
Health//
Generally they are healthy dogs. Parents are scanned for Hip Dysplasia and have their eyes tested breeding so problems relating to this are not common.
Special Care//
There is no particular special care.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
