A gentle and friendly dog with a clouded history, the debate still rages about the true origins of the breed. Newfoundland's are renowned for their ability to rescue people from water and Lord Byron immortalised the breed in his touching poem 'Epitaph to a Dog'.
Character//
Even-tempered and a loyal companion, the Breed Standard notes their "natural life saving instinct" and exceptionally gentle temperament.
Size//
The height at the shoulder should be 71cm for dogs and 66cm for bitches, a weight of 64-69kg and 50-54.5kg is also acceptable.
Health//
Prone to Hip Dysplasia and heart conditions.
Special Care//
Exercise should be limited whilst still a puppy to avoid increasing the risk of joint problems.
