Neapolitan Mastiffs are an ancient breed that have been used as guardians for centuries and form the basis of many of today's large breeds. Their size, strength and appearance helped earn their reputation as formidable protectors and they were even used to fight lions during Roman gladiatorial contests.
Character//
Devoted to their owner and with a wonderful guarding temperament. Often stubborn but generally quick to catch on when pointed in the right direction. Males may exhibit dominance issues toward other males but they will get on with other animals they've been raised with.
Size//
The Breed Standard specifies a height of 65-75cm and a weight of 50-70kg.
Health//
As a large dog the Neapolitan Mastiff is prone to bloat and Hip Dysplasia. A common illness amongst the breed is cherry eye, a prolapsing of the third eyelid. They are also prone to skin conditions if care isn't taken to clean the flaps of skin around their face.
Special Care//
As a massive dog the Neapolitan Mastiff needs extensive training and socialization to keep them safe and under control.
