A genuinely massive breed, the Mastiff (sometimes referred to as the English Mastiff) is descended from the Roman Molossians and has a long history as a guard, companion and fighter. The Mastiff is renowned for its intelligence and ability to identify a threatening situation.
Character//
They are gentle and peaceable with their family, affectionate toward children and clearly courageous. The Mastiff has historically been bred as a guard-dog and these instincts are still strong, they will be wary and maybe even aggressive toward those strangers they feel threatened by.
Size//
Dogs should measure around 75-82cm, bitches at least 66cm and weighing between 70-90kg.
Health//
As a large breed they are prone to Hip Dysplasia and Bloat although with care both of these can be avoided. They are also susceptible to certain eye and heart problems although buying from a reputable breeder should lessen the risk of inherited diseases.
Special Care//
Owning a Mastiff is a massive responsibility as they can pose a real threat to people if they haven't been properly trained and socialized.
