A smart little dog with a sweet temperament. The Maltese used to be popular with the court of Elizabeth I and can trace its origins back to Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations where its job was to keep the ports clear of vermin and also to alert of intruders in a manner similar to the Lhasa Apso.
Character//
Intelligent and tireless, the Maltese is great fun but does need an established training program and care should be taken not to spoil the dog. They are relatively calm and can be quite sensitive to over-excitable children.
Size//
Dogs should not exceeding 25cm to the withers.
Health//
Common ailments that afflict the Maltese include eye conditions, skin disorders (especially where their coat is parted) and dental problems.
Special Care//
Eyes and ears should be kept clear of hair, you will often see Maltese with their hair tied above their head. They are also prone to tear staining and a regular cleaning of the area around the eyes is needed to limit this.
