A large, formidable breed of dog descended from a mixture of St. Bernards, Newfoundlands and Great Pyrenees. Leonbergers, named after their hometown, have been used to guard flocks, rescue climbers and now are becoming an increasingly popular pet.

Character//

A loyal and docile giant, Leonbergers are loving toward their family and kind with children. They aren't aggressive although they would benefit from a firm and kind socialization and training process.

Size//

The Breed Standard specifies a height for dogs of between 72-80cm measured at the withers, 65-75cm for bitches.

Health//

Leonbergers are a hardy breed and free from major hereditary diseases although as with other large breeds they are prone to Hip Dysplasia, especially if their exercise isn't managed carefully during their early years.

Special Care//

With dogs of this size proper socialization and training is essential to avoid boisterous behaviour developing into un-restrain able exuberance.

Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
