The Labrador is one of the nations favourites. They have a good temperament and are adaptable to various situations, which makes them a great family pet or companion for the young and old. Originally bred as gundogs, Labs also make great working dogs. When buying ask to see the hip and eye scores of your potential new pups parents as bad hips can be an issue. If properly trained they need not be kept on the lead but this does depend on individual too.

Character//

Active, biddable and loveable! They are good-natured and affectionate, perfect for the family environment. They are easy to train for a variety of jobs and a working Lab is excellent either on the peg or trailing. They are comfortable with other dogs and pets as don't tend to be overly aggressive and are able to be involved with all aspects of family life.

Size//

Medium, bitches tend to be around 28 kg and stand around 54cm high with dogs reaching 56cm as standard and weighing in at around 30kg.

Health//

They are not generally susceptible to illness although when purchasing a puppy check that the breeder has checked for hereditary problems before you buy; Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Epilepsy can be passed down through the genes. Checking for this will reduce the chances of this being a problem with your pup in later life. Other common ailments include ear infections and cancer is also problem.

Special Care//

Generally they require little special care but beware of the bulge! Retrievers are fans of their food and can get a bit porky if their diet is not monitored.

Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
