A hardy Spitz-type dog, originally bred to hunt small game and vermin in the mountainous and bushy regions of Japan. The name Shiba-Inu translates variously as "small dog" and "brushwood dog".
Character//
The Shiba-Inu is, like other spitz breeds, independent minded and intelligent. Obedience training is essential but also challenging as they will rarely perform tricks they feel to be pointless. They are however relatively easy to house-train because of their fastidious attitudes toward cleanliness. They have the attitude of larger dogs and so will require a good deal of socialization and care to avoid any aggressive behaviour in later life.
Size//
A medium sized dog, the Breed Standard recommends a height of around 39.5cm for dogs and 36.5cm for bitches.
Health//
A healthy breed, although some bloodlines are now prone to epilepsy and food allergies. Average life expectancy is between 12-15 years.
Special Care//
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
