The Great Dane is the largest dog breed, yet despite its size, it has a very elegant and balanced physique. Unlike some of the giant breeds, the proportions of the Great Dane are balanced, allowing him an agility and control which is rare for a dog of his size. This dog is renowned as a gentle giant with a calm and affectionate nature.
Character//
The Dane is a very relaxed breed, comfortable around strangers, children and other animals. They exhibit an excellent patience with children and other than their size, make superb family pets. The only concern with introducing Danes to young children is that they may inadvertently cause harm, due to their huge stature. Danes exhibit no trace of aggression and seem to have the character of an elderly gentleman.
Size//
Dogs should measure 76-86cm. Weight: 54-90kg.
Health//
The Dane does not have a long life span. As with many large dog breeds, Danes suffer from a number of medical complaints. The most serious of which are Bone Cancers and Cardiomyopathy, a severe genetic heart condition. Other ailments include : Bloat, Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Cataracts and severe growth pains due rapid early growth.
Special Care//
Care should be taken around the old and very young, as Danes do not comprehend their size.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
