This Irish breed was only exported to America in 1968 and is still rarely seen outside their native Wicklow. Bred as a vermin hunter, the Imaal is at home diving down rabbit holes and chasing foxes. They are strong and playful and make excellent companions for children. This dog does however, possess a strong hunting instinct and can agitate other dogs.
Character//
Imaal's are very loyal and laid back dogs. They possess incredible stamina and when stimulated, can work almost non-stop. Having said this, they can also have lazy moods where they will often have to be dragged out for a walk. The Imaal Terrier makes an excellent watchdog and often forgets its size and charges into action. This can cause problems with other dogs as their hunting instinct has not been bred out, and often leads to confrontations.
Size//
33-35cm, weight: 14-16kg.
Health//
A healthy breed with little in the way of problems. As with many small breeds, degenerative eye problems have been recorded, as has Hip Dysplasia.
Special Care//
When out on a walk this breed has a tendency to chase any other animal it sees, including other dogs. This can make them difficult to control at times and requires strong training.
