Able to trace their ancestry back to the Neolithic, the German Spitz is one of the oldest of domestic breeds. Essentially a European breed, the Spitz was introduced to America during the early 20th century, but due to the First World War, the breed name was changed to the American Eskimo Dog.
Character//
The German Spitz is an intelligent breed and performs well at agility events. Due to their intelligence, they can often be slightly strong willed and will need a patient and consistent trainer, but are keen to please.
Size//
23-29cm. Weight: 7-11kg.
Health//
Due to this breed's history and general natural pedigree, health problems are minimal. The only fault, which has been recorded, is an knee defect known as Patella Luxation, which can be common in many small breeds.
Special Care//
The German Spitz is an extremely affectionate and sociable breed and as such they require a lot of attention and do not cope well with being left on their own for extended periodsRemember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
