One of the most popular and visible breeds in the UK, the German Shepherd has often been referred to as the Alsatian. A popular companion as well as working dog, the German Shepherd's have proved themselves as loyal and faithful comrades countless times. They are blessed with an incredible scenting ability that should be exercised as much as possible.
Character//
Lively and alert, intelligence is highly apparent. The German Shepherd is a highly trainable breed although maturity does not occur until around three years old so training and socialization is a relatively drawn out process. As a youth the German Shepherd can be quite boisterous although aggression should not be tolerated. They are exceptionally loyal and easy-going provided they are adequately engaged throughout the day.
Size//
An ideal height should be around 63cm at the shoulder, bitches are slightly smaller at around 58cm.
Health//
Unfortunately the GSD has suffered at the hands of poor breeders due to its popularity and there are a number of conditions that can afflict the breed, Hip Dysplasia, congenital blood conditions, heart defects, epilepsy and skin conditions amongst them.
Special Care//
Research your breeder carefully, poor stock can lead to character faults and medical conditions that are all avoidable if proper care has been taken to manage the line.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
