Another breed whose characteristics are closely tied into its working past. Estrela Mountain Dogs were used to guard flocks on the high ground during the summer whilst guarding the families and villages during the winter months. Apparently one of the oldest breeds from the Iberian Peninsula and certainly one of the hardest working.
Character//
Bred for guarding flocks, the relatively unchanged nature of this breed means it has retained this instinct. They are quite and contemplative at times and active and energetic at others. They are exceptionally loyal and make wonderful family pets providing they have been suitably socialized and trained with care and patience from an early age.
Size//
Giant, dogs of this breed can measure up to 72cms whilst the bitches may reach a height of 68cms.
Health//
As with all large breeds care should be taken to check for Hip Dysplasia and other muscular and joint conditions.
Special Care//
This is an exceptionally large dog and so should be provided with adequate space in which to live.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
