Having been originally bred to protect flocks and use its size and power as a deterrent, the Dogue de Bordeaux also experienced a period as a fighter before the practice was outlawed.
Character//
A sweet personality that benefits from extensive early socialization and a patient training routine. Dogue's are protective and loyal with an even, stable temperament. The Breed Standard describes them as "vigilant and courageous without aggression."e's do best in loving families and do not respond well to exclusion from the household.
Size//
Their massive size should result more from width and build than height, the Breed Standard specifies that dogs should measure 60-68cm at the shoulder and bitches 58-66cm. Weight should be at least 50kg and 45kg.
Health//
Their substantial bone structure and weight makes them prone to hip dysplasia and muscular issues. Unfortunately they also seem to have a higher incidence of cancer than other breeds. Bloat may also be a concern. An average lifespan will fall between 8-12 years.
Special Care//
The folds of skin on their face need to be cleaned regularly to prevent any sort of skin infection or irritation occurring. Also, their size and strength make them a bit of a handful to control.
