Despite their size and a somewhat ill-deserved reputation a well bred Dobermann is an ideal family pet, a cheerful disposition is the norm whilst the common image of them as vicious is a blinkered view that takes only their excellent guarding ability into account.
Character//
Independent and strong-minded, the Dobermann is highly trainable but requires a firm, consistent routine for anything to be effective. The Doberman will reciprocate any behaviour toward it, if its treated with respect and care then it will grow to be a respectful and caring dog, never losing its sense of power and protection but certainly not exhibiting the aggressive streak that many assume this breed possess.
Size//
The Breed Standard specifies a height of 69cm at the withers for dogs and 65cm for bitches.
Health//
Hip Dysplasia and congenital heart conditions are all present in the breed, as well as a genetic blood condition called von Willebrand's disease.
Special Care//
As such a large dog the Dobermann is undeniably powerful and will not suffer ill treatment or rough handling so care should be taken to properly educate children about how best to play with the dog so as to avoid any accidents.
