Inky dinky - unsurprisingly the Chihuahua is classified in the toy section. Though tiny in size, they have a big character and are alert and bold. They will bond closely with their owners but are not great with new acquaintances so can appear nervous, yappy and even snappy. On the flip size they can make great watch dogs as they bark readily. They must be socialized from a young age or can be unhappy in new situations and with young children. The single person lifestyle would be best.
Character//
They are affectionate in a one-to-one situations but can be feisty when they are out and about and with other dogs although this does depend on the level of socialization that they have had. They are not recommended as family pets as tend to be individual types. They are intelligent and are very trainable if started at a young age - some are known to use litter trays.
Size//
Generally they stand between 15-23cm tall and the Breed Standard states a weight between 4-6Ibs.
Health//
There are some health issues, as is the case with many small dogs. They often have problems with their joints, mainly caused by jumping on and off furniture, a big jump for a small dog. They also suffer from weak tracheas and Chihuahuas particularly are prone to cleft palates. Haemophilia carried by bitches also commonly manifests in the male breed. Plaque build up on their teeth is also common and regular brushing is required.
Special Care//
Special caution should be taken with them around children, their size makes them popular candidates for being handled but having a rather a feisty nature can be a problem.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
