A much misunderstood breed and often housed in unsuitable situations. The Border Collie requires plenty of exercise and mental stimulation in order to stave off negative behaviour. They are to all extents and purpose the working dog of Britain, considered by many to be the most intelligent and hardworking breed around and a common sight on farmland across the country.

Character//

Still very much a working dog, the Collie will try its best to herd children and small animals and although they are generally friendly without adequate stimulation their activities can quickly get out of hand. The Breed Standard describes them as "keen, alert, responsive and intelligent", all ideal traits for a working breed.

Size//

The size of the Border collie should be anywhere between 46-54cm and weighing up to 22kg.

Health//

With a full and active lifestyle the Collie should be generally healthy. They are susceptible to Hip Dysplasia as with most of the bigger, active breeds. There is also a condition known as Collie Eye Anomaly, an inherited eye defect often mistaken for conjunctivitis. There are tests available so make sure to check with the breeder before purchasing.

Special Care//

Exercise should be monitored in their early years to help avoid muscular and joint issues. Keeping a Collie interested and active is the most important care you should take.

Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
