The Bichon Frise is an excellent companion breed, getting on easily with other pets and children. They are renowned for their excellent sense of humour and fun expressed through their emotive eyes and compassionate character.
Character//
A friendly, easy-going breed and remarkably hardy considering its size. Their happy disposition and funny nature have helped make them a popular breed for those with families. They are easily trained and keen to please and the breed had previously found work as circus dog.
Size//
Classified as a toy breed, the Bichon's Breed Standard places the ideal height as between 23-28cm.
Health//
A generally healthy little breed, the one area of concern is regarding the occurrence of deficiencies in their immune systems with two conditions being particularly prevalent; autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). Owners should pay particular attention to signs of lethargy and loss of appetite as these conditions can strike quickly and have a relatively high mortality rate. Despite that the average lifespan for a Bichon is between 12-15 years.
Special Care//
The Bichon Frise does not shed their coat and as such are considered more suitable for those with allergies to dog hair. They are also prone to tear staining around the eyes and will require a regular treatment to prevent this becoming excessive.
