Character//
A well-balanced dog with a sweet temperament. The Bernese are loyal breed who thrive when included in family activities. They exhibit a natural affinity to children although due to their size and excitability care should be taken when in highly charged situations as they could accidentally cause injury through their playful hijinks. Aggression should not be tolerated.
Size//
A large breed, dogs should measure between 64-70cm and bitches 58-66cm. They weigh in at a substantial 40-50kg.
Health//
An average lifespan of 6-8 years is remarkably short. The breed is prone to joint problems such as hip Dysplasia as well as bloat. They also suffer from a higher than average incidence of cancer, hence their shorter life spans.
Special Care//
They don't like being left alone and their training process needs to be slow and gradual because maturity isn't reached until between 18 months and two years of age. They require firm socialization as their natural instinct is toward guarding and they will defend their owners and property vigorously if threatened.Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
