Originally bred to protect livestock on the plains surrounding Paris the breed retains a strong herding instinct. The Beauceron will make an excellent guard dog.
Character//
The Breed Standard describes them as "bold, fearless and intelligent". They will be loyal and protective of their family, guarding all members and property with vigour. Suspicious of strangers, they will also attempt to exert their dominance over other male dogs so care should be taken when letting them off the lead.
Size//
The Breed Standard states that dogs should be between 65-70cms and bitches 63-68cms in height.
Health//
In common with most large breeds the Beauceron is at risk of hip Dysplasia and bloat.
Special Care//
Despite their wonderful temperament, you must remember that the Beauceron is a large breed and will require care and attention around children even if they've grown up together. Try getting involved with some activities to keep them stimulated and exercised as well.
