One of the oldest breeds, images of the Basenji's ancestors have been depicted in the tombs of the Pharaohs. The breed developed in the Congo to help hunt small game, protect villages and work as a guide.
Character//
The Basenji does not bark but instead makes a yodelling sound when happy. They are rather cold toward strangers but affectionate and playful with those they know. Certainly possessing an independent nature, combined with their limitless energy they can sometimes prove to be a bit of a handful. Firm training is required from a young age although the Basenji will rarely excel in trial events. They have often been described as similar to cats in many respects.
Size//
A small to medium sized breed, the Basenji should measure 40-43cm and weigh 9-11kg.
Health//
Unfortunately the Basenji is prone to a number of different conditions concerning their ability to absorb nutrients into the blood. Falconi syndrome is the main issue and care should be taken that it isn't wrongly diagnosed as diabetes.
Special Care//
The Basenji needs to be kept active and in plenty of space. If left alone for long periods their behaviour will turn destructive.
