Its roots can be traced back to the mountainous regions of Turkey where it was bred to guard sheep and villages against the threat of wolves. A confident breed and one that will require plenty of affection, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has a strong protective streak requiring a firm early socialization process.
Character//
Bold and confidant yet not aggressive, the Anatolian will benefit from a secure, stable environment, as they are a very possessive breed. Their stubbornness and independence means they will require a firm training routine and often benefit from the presence of a alpha figure in the household to keep them in line.
Size//
A giant breed, the adult dog can measure anywhere between 74-81cm, 71-78cm for the bitch.
Health//
Being a giant breed, Hip Dysplasia may be an issue although any breeder should have tested their dogs prior to allowing them to produce a litter. They have a relatively long lifespan compared to other similarly sized dogs being on average 11-15 years.
Special Care//
Due to their strong guarding instincts, strength and size, the Anatolian should be watched carefully around children. They may also exhibit aggressive behaviour toward other dogs and animals.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
