Affectionately known as the "snow train" due to its incredible strength and stamina, the Malamute was bred by an Innuit tribe called the Mahlemuts to pull sleds and hunt. Although not as fast as the Husky it is a much stronger breed and will happily live as part of family.
Character//
The Malamute is such a friendly dog that it is completely useless for guarding purposes but it will assume a dominant role amongst other dogs. Fairly obstinate and independent in character, they require firm training from an early age but will remain playful and affectionate.
Size//
A sturdy large breed, the Malamute should weigh between 38-56kg and according to the Breed Standard the dog should stand between 64-71cm and the bitch 58-66cm.
Health//
With all large breeds the risk of Hip Dysplasia is present, although it is said to be rare in the Malamute, just be sure to take care whilst exercising the young. Their temperature is one other area to keep a watch over as with their thick coats and Alaskan heritage they do not handle heat well.
Special Care//
The Malamute is a hardy breed and so requires little special care other than paying attention to its body temperature and not allowing them to overheat. They do not deal with inactivity and enclosure well either and have been know to cause a great deal of damage to interiors when left to their own devices for a length of time.
