The Akita is a well-recognized symbol of Japan and having originally being bred for fighting and guarding the Imperial palaces, they then became a popular companion breed after the stories of Hachi-ko. Hachi-ko was an incredibly loyal Akita who would meet his master at the train station each day, continuing to do so well after his master's death and becoming a national icon in the process.
Character//
A pack-orientated breed who will not react well to being left on his own for long periods of time and may develop negative character traits in such a situation. Akita's are loyal and considered excellent with family children, although they will remain aloof and distant toward strangers.
Size//
Dogs should measure 66-71cm and bitches 61-66cm..
Health//
A generally healthy breed, the main concerns are those of all large breeds, Bloat and Hip Dysplasia.
Special Care//
A male Akita will often attempt to show his dominance over other dogs so care should be taken whilst in public, it may be best to keep them on the lead at all times in such situations.
